Creative Action Taps into Kids' Artistic Creativity

Wednesday, March 23, 2016

In the crowded landscape of summer camp options, it can be tough to pick one that doesn't just fill the time. One where your child can't wait to go back the next day and carries what they learned into the school year and beyond. Creative Action's summer camps don't just fill time: they'll instill your child with the know-how, drive, and confidence to pursue their passions.

As the largest provider of creative arts education in Austin, Creative Action has quickly become one of our city's most prominent nonprofit organizations, influencing the lives of over 20,000 kids annually. The educational sector has produced a growing body of research that shows tangible long-term benefits of arts education, such as enhanced emotional regulation. Accordingly, Creative Action's broad suite of programs develop creative thinking and artistic skills while emphasizing social-emotional awareness and development, and their work has recently garnered high-profile awards and national recognition.

This year Creative Action presents a wide array of one- and two-week long summer camps for ages 5-14 that stay true to their unique mission of inspiring kids to become Critical Thinkers, Creative Artists, Confident Leaders, and Courageous Allies through the arts. With fun field trips, engaged instructors, and diverse activities, Creative Action summer camps rise above the rest. Let's take a look at some standouts:

Cultivating Community
In collaboration with Sustainable Food Center, campers create garden art installations, journey into the Boggy Creek Watershed, and prepare sustainable snacks while learning how celebrating shared spaces makes for a happy, healthy Austin. (Ages 5-9)

Broadway or Bust
This camp is for triple-threats -- act, dance and sing onstage in a celebration of musical theatre. Campers also try their hands at costuming, choreography, and mask-making as they inhabit the worlds of Willy Wonka, The Lion King, Wicked and more! (Ages 5-9)

Film Studio: 21st Century Classics
Campers dive into the art and history of filmmaking from storyboard to screen, then apply that knowledge with the latest technology to direct and star in their own films. Not only will they get their own private 35mm screening at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, but the Ritz will also host a red carpet premiere of their films on the last day of camp! (Ages 10-14)

Theatre Studio: Live Action Radio Play
Serial. Nightvale. This American Life. Campers take to the rising tide of podcasts and audio storytelling, learning all about the craft and then creating their own original radio play from start to finish. This camp features a trip to KUT studios, and the original plays will be broadcast on KUTX. (Ages 10-14)

It's never too early to push the boundaries. Campers will explore the life and work of influential artists who changed the art world, from Dali to Duchamp, and apply their influence to take their creativity to the next level. (Ages 5-9)

"This was the most fun my daughter has ever had at camp! The counselors are so great and enthusiastic and everyone just looked like they were having a blast all week - and especially at the end of the week performance! We will be doing more Creative Action!"

Andrea, Creative Action Camp Parent

Their award-winning camps are thoughtfully developed and led by professional working artists across a spectrum of disciplines. Counselors are as dedicated to enriching your child's interests as they are to making every day fun and thrilling -- all to maximize every child's creative passion. Whether your child is a quiet "behind-the-scenes" player or an outgoing "center stage" star, or anywhere in between, there's a Creative Action camp to nurture their skills and talents.

Camps take place at three locations in East, North Central, and East Austin, with before and after care available at the East and North Central locations. At $275 for one-week sessions and $495 for two-week sessions, these camps are highly affordable, but scholarships are available for qualifying families.
