Backpacks and diapers and formula, oh my!
Although extremely hot and humid, June is a VERY exciting month for Nurture My Child, as we have kicked off our very first Kids Helping Kids campaign benefiting the local Austin, TX non-profit, Carrying Hope. For the entire month, we have had businesses and organizations all over the Austin metropolitan area collecting bags/backpacks, as well as diapers and formula that will all be donated to Carrying Hope during their Hope Pack Drive on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to noon, at The Browning Hangar at Mueller (4550 Mueller Blvd. Austin, TX 78723).
At our half-way mark in this campaign, we want to share with you what our efforts (and yours!) look like so far. One of our participating organizations, Bastrop ISD, is constantly committed to helping children in the community. They have three child development centers that serve children ages 6 weeks to 5 years, and even though their facilities are closed for the summer, they have had tremendous support from their families and the school district thus far during this campaign!
St. George’s Episcopal School is another one of our local schools participating in this campaign, and we love hearing the stories about their donations. One example is how little Eleanor walked in one morning carrying -- with all her might -- a box of diapers to donate that was bigger than she was!
Irene's family has donated twice since St. George’s Episcopal School started collecting in the beginning of June. One of her donations was a case of diapers that her family received as an automatic delivery, but since Irene is now officially potty trained (yay Irene!!!), she and her mom were more than happy to drop off this box of diapers for Carrying Hope’s Hope Packs.
We are excited to see what some of our other groups come up with during the final push of this campaign, as well. The donations are starting to pour in for Grade Power Learning, a local business that offers tutoring services, which has been actively participating in our efforts all while helping kids prevent the dreaded summer slide during summer break.
Abacus Children’s Academy, which offers child first Montessori style preschool and infant care to children ages 6 weeks to 12 years, has also been collecting donations up in the Pflugerville area. Badgerdog and the Austin Library Foundation are encouraging their creative writing students to go one step beyond Carrying Hope’s most needed items (backpacks, diapers and formula) and have opened up their collections to also include books, blankets, and other items that are appreciated to create a complete Hope Pack for children entering the central Texas foster care system. Up in the Round Rock area, 4Reelz School of Film is gathering donations all while teaching children in various summer camps how to embrace their dramatic creativity and learn all about making movies and films!
If you would like to jump on board and join our efforts, it's not too late! Each child who donates is entered to win a family pass to the Thinkery, and we’re encouraging a little friendly compeition between our participating schools and businesses with a $100 VISA gift card from us for the organization with the most donations! Feel free to email Rebecca Cole at Rebecca@nurturemychild.com to get set up. We appreciate this opportunity to connect with our families and with the Austin community through this Kids Helping Kids campaign. We look forward to sharing what our collective donation pile looks like at the end of the month!
